CONMEBOL supports Infantino’s vision 2020-2023: VAR’s global expansion

Gianni Infantino, FIFA President, has received the support of all ten CONMEBOL association members of the South American football confederation, CONMEBOL, for standing in the election at the 73rd FIFA Congress, which will take place in Kigali, Rwanda, on 16 March 2023.

The backing agreement was confirmed when FIFA President Gianni Infantino attended the CONMEBOL Council meeting in Luque, Paraguay. The following meeting announced that the Video Assistant Referee will be used in all events of CONMEBOL competitions starting in 2023. President Infantino’s Vision is to gear up modern games with the help of technology to execute VAR across the globe.

The Council, resolving the previous logistical and technical errors, stated that from the next FIFA, the CONMEBOL Recopa, CONMEBOL Sudamericana, and CONMEBOL Libertadores would implement their VAR technology from the beginning phases till the final.

Infantino was first elected as FIFA president in 2016 and was re-elected in 2019. The CONMEBOL member associations have collectively united with Infantino, who will be the third term FIFA president shortly.
